Reborn for a retired resident, a former carriage house epitomizes the potential for aging in place.
When a married couple purchased a home with a detached original carriage house in Mount Airy’s historic Pelham neighborhood, they saw the potential for their retired relative to live with them. They tasked C2 with renovating the carriage house into a home that accommodates aging in place.
The design incorporated a two-bed, two-bath program and retained the carriage house’s architectural character. New glazed openings replaced the original carriage doors to create an entry that benefits from the deep roof overhang.
The glass imbues the adjacent kitchen, living, and dining areas with natural light. The kitchen wraps the corner of the living space and retains an original round window. Its custom walnut millwork conceals the primary suite door.
The living space captures the original double-height volume, while an office and guest bed and bath are tucked beneath the eaves upstairs. The compact plan does not include a single hallway; every space integrates intentionally with those around it for maximum efficiency.
Variegated Heath ceramic tiles bring cool tones of blue and green into the kitchen and baths while painted and natural bead board warm the walls. Reborn as a residence, the carriage house – and its new occupant – both benefit from a reimagined opportunity to age gracefully.
