A pool table inspired an addition that modernizes and expands an 1880s Chestnut Hill home.
Located on a double lot in the historic Chestnut Hill neighborhood, this project brought additional living space to a three-story stone house. Despite the home’s grand street presence, its small rooms made gathering difficult. In particular, the family wanted a space to play pool.
C2 designed a series of interventions that expand the house without overwhelming it. An addition inserted behind the L-shaped footprint of the house contains a new kitchen on the first level with a new primary suite above. A separate horizontal extension counterbalances the vertical drama of the existing house. This one-story pitched volume contains new living space, sized to accommodate a pool table.
Large, glazed openings face the front garden and street. Clad in traditional cedar shake siding for contrast with the existing variegated stone facades, the volume connects to the house via a monochromatic stucco link that provides a new public entry. The reorganization shifts circulation to the newer, more open parts of the house, including improved access to the owner’s basement quilting studio.
