C2 transformed a former garage into a modern office for a residential construction company.
When Hanson Fine Building acquired a former garage, the company knew it could become a great office that would showcase the company’s emphasis on high-performance construction. Hanson engaged C2 to redesign the building for function and efficiency.
A dual-peaked roof and sloping floor in the former garage made envisioning the new space difficult. C2 removed all of the structural collar ties, added new steel bracing, and raised the floor in some places as much as 18 inches to achieve a level floor surface. By establishing a simple, clean layout that fits and complements the existing structure, the original garage height could be preserved in the central office area.
Spaces requiring some degree of privacy – kitchen, restrooms, and conference rooms – are located beneath flat roofs on the sides of the building. New skylights accent the dramatic exposed wood roof structure and fill the open office space with light. To demonstrate Hanson’s commitment to sustainable, high-performance design, the office was built well above code requirements; it includes super insulation and energy recovery ventilation (ERV).
