As part of a full-block revitalization in Germantown, C2 designed a compact new infill house.
Nestled between a former garage and 17th century historic house, the vacant lot at 58 Queen Lane had a small scale with big potential. C2 saw the design challenge as an exercise in simplicity of form and ease of construction. The incredibly compact design fits three bedrooms and two-and-a-half baths into a new infill home that restores the lot and the block’s architectural integrity.
The house’s boxy form features an offset, steeply pitched roof; on the interior, this vaulting creates an entry sequence and visual openness. All of the rooms benefit from the valuated ceilings and skylights, which fill spaces with natural light.
A kitchen positioned at the front of the house engages with the streetscape while the living space at the rear connects to a new covered patio and landscaped backyard. Thoughtful details abound – like the shoe bench beside the front door and windowsill display ledges in the bedrooms – executed in semi-custom millwork from Danish company Reform.
The comprehensive Queen Lane project involved restoring three deteriorated structures and building an infill fourth home. The undertaking was an opportunity to stabilize the block – less than a mile from the C2 office – and make an architectural statement that even the most deteriorated structures have inherent value.
